Gastric Bypass Surgery
CentraCare Weight Management offers gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) surgery. We perform the surgery with a laparoscopic, minimally invasive approach. This means that the surgery only requires three to five, small, half inch incisions in your abdomen resulting in a shorter surgery, less recovery time and reduced scarring.
How is gastric bypass surgery performed?
The surgeon begins by dividing the top portion of your stomach from the bottom with surgical staples. The resulting top pouch is about the size of walnut and holds about one ounce of food. The remainder of the stomach is then attached to the small intestine. This allows food to bypass most of your stomach and some of your small intestines so that your body absorbs fewer nutrients or calories.
What are the advantages of gastric bypass surgery?
- This surgery is effective for improving or resolving high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea and many other medical issues.
- Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) is cured.
- Most patients lose 60-80 percent of excess body weight with this procedure.
- Weight loss occurs over a 12- to 18-month period.
