Symptoms and Treatment

When should I use Virtual Urgent Care?

Virtual Urgent Care provides 24/7 video visits from anywhere in the United States for common illnesses and symptoms for patients 2 years and older. Through CentraCare’s partnership with KeyCare, you have access to care when it matters most.

Virtual Urgent care is ideal for non-emergent conditions needing to be addressed same-day and when you are not able to see your primary care provider.

What symptoms and conditions can be treated at a Virtual Urgent Care visit?

Virtual Urgent Care clinicians can treat many of the same conditions you can be seen for in-person. Common conditions and symptoms our patients use Virtual Urgent Care for include:

  • Allergies
  • Acne
  • Cold / Cough / Flu / Sinus
  • Head Lice
  • Insect Bites
  • Low Back Pain
  • Pink Eye
  • Sore Throat
  • Sunburns
  • Rash or other minor skin problems
  • Urinary Tract Infection
  • Vaginal Discharge / Irritation

What if you can’t treat my symptom or condition virtually?

Your clinician will ask you a series of questions to better understand if your symptoms or condition can be diagnosed or treated virtually. If your specific situation requires a more in-depth assessment than what can be treated virtually, you will be directed to an in-person care option. There may be a charge based on the services provided.

Can I schedule a Virtual Urgent Care visit for my child?

Yes. We treat many common conditions for children age 2 years and older including pink eye, sore throat, swimmer’s ear and rashes. Our ability to diagnosis virtually varies by age and symptom.

What if I need lab services as part of my visit?

If you are in Minnesota and speaking with a CentraCare clinician who determines you do need a lab service ordered, they will place the order at the nearest available CentraCare lab where a same-day appointment is available.

For after hours and weekend Virtual Urgent Care visits, only CentraCare’s Laboratory Services at Plaza Clinic in St. Cloud are available for lab orders Monday-Friday 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. and 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

KeyCare clinicians cannot schedule labs. If it is determined a lab visit is necessary, you will be directed to find care in-person.

What is the difference between scheduling an appointment and putting myself in line?
An appointment is scheduled with a CentraCare clinician on the same day you request it. Patients select a time, and they are expected to join a video call at the designated time.

When you select "put me in line," the first available KeyCare clinician will be with you. You are expected to stay on the video call as you wait for the clinician.

How do I cancel a scheduled Virtual Urgent Care visit?

Virtual Urgent Care visits can be canceled in MyChart or by calling CentraCare Connect at 320-200-3200. If you plan to cancel your visit, please do so as far ahead as possible, so that your appointment can be offered to another patient.

How do I schedule a visit for my child?

For children 2-11 years old, a parent or legal guardian must schedule the visit on behalf of the child. Patients who are 12 to 17 years old may schedule directly using their own MyChart account, or if using KeyCare, their parent or guardian must schedule for them. Adults require health care proxy access to their child’s CentraCare MyChart account.

Can I use my MyChart account to start a visit for another member of my family?

You are able to initiate a visit through your MyChart account for family members ages 2 and older where you have proxy access.

If you have proxy access to a child under 12 years old or an adult, log into your MyChart, choose the adult or child’s profile linked to your account, then select Menu > Virtual Urgent Care. Based on clinician availability, you will be able to choose either a CentraCare clinician or a KeyCare clinician.

For patients between the ages of 12 and 17, go to MyChart, go to > Menu > Virtual Urgent Care > Start a Visit For a Guest. Select the KeyCare option. This will launch you into a KeyCare visit.

What technology do I need for a video visit?

You will need access to the internet and a device with a working camera, microphone and speakers. You will have the opportunity to test your device prior to your appointment time.

What if I have technical issues during my visit?

Care Team

Who will I see?

Where can I access my visit details?

For visits with a CentraCare clinician, log into your MyChart account and navigate to the Visits page to access your after-visit summary.

For KeyCare visits:

Adult Patients: Log into your MyChart account and navigate to the Visits page to access your after-visit summary.

For Patients seen via Proxy: KeyCare sends an email to the proxy. From there the proxy must enter their date of birth to access a limited AVS.

For follow-up medical questions after your visit with a CentraCare clinician, call CentraCare Connect at 320-200-3200 to be routed to the Virtual Urgent Care team.

If you have a follow-up medical question after your visit with a KeyCare clinician, call 888-805-0085.

Depending on the nature of the follow-up question, you may be asked to complete a new Virtual Urgent Care visit.

Can Virtual Urgent Care clinicians prescribe medication?

CentraCare clinicians are licensed in the state of Minnesota and are able to prescribe certain medications as part of your care plan, if clinically appropriate and for in-state patients.

KeyCare Virtual Urgent Care clinicians are licensed in the state where you are receiving care and are able to prescribe certain medications as part of your care plan, if clinically appropriate.

Clinicians never provide prescriptions for controlled substances.

If a prescription medication is part of your treatment plan, you can send it to the pharmacy of your choice. You are responsible for the cost of any prescriptions, over-the-counter treatments or follow-up visits you may need related to prescriptions.

Cost and Insurance

Is my Virtual Urgent Care visit covered by insurance?

If you are in Minnesota when you have your visit, most health insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare and medical assistance. The amount your insurance covers is dependent on your insurance plan. Please contact your health insurance company to understand your plan’s coverage so you can plan accordingly. If you are out of Minnesota at the time of your visit, insurance will not be billed, and you will be responsible for the full amount.

Is my visit covered by Veteran’s Affairs (VA) government payer plans?

This service is not intended for those with a government payer plan of Veteran’s Affairs (VA). Veteran’s Affairs patients need prior authorization from the VA for their services to be eligible for coverage.

How much does a Virtual Urgent Care visit cost?

Virtual Urgent Care visits cost the same as in-person Urgent Care visits. Fees range from $164-$645.50 and depend on the level of service provided during the visit.

What if I have questions about my bill?

CentraCare manages the billing for Virtual Urgent Care visits. For questions about your bill, contact Customer Service at 320-255-5622.

What is KeyCare?

KeyCare is a virtual care platform that offers video visits on-demand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from anywhere in the United States. CentraCare is dedicated to expanding access to care when you need it most through our partnership with KeyCare.

If you choose a KeyCare video visit, you will not see a CentraCare clinician.

KeyCare clinicians are a network of independent physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who provide care via video 24/7.

Will KeyCare clinicians have access to my medical records?

If you have signed the CentraCare Health Information Exchange (HIE) consent form, KeyCare clinicians are able to query, find and retrieve your medical record as a part of requesting an appointment. This will allow for KeyCare clinicians to avoid asking you to re-enter certain medical history like medications and problems. Without an HIE consent on file with CentraCare, a KeyCare video visit is not available.

How do I sign the HIE consent form?

The HIE consent form is accessible from your MyChart account. Go to Menu > Document Center > My Documents > HIE Consent. If you need help locating the HIE in your MyChart account, please call MyChart Support from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at 320-240-7897.
