What Are Breast, Pelvic & Pap Exams?
During a breast exam, doctors use their fingertips to feel your breast tissue. If they find a lump or something else unusual, they may recommend you get a mammogram or another imaging test to learn more.
During a pelvic exam, doctors look at the vulva and vagina to assess sexual health. They also perform a Pap smear, which uses a small device to check your cervix for cells that could be cancer.
Ask your doctor how often you need these tests based on your age, symptoms, overall health and other factors.
Where to Get Your Exams
You can receive breast and pelvic exams at:
- An OB-GYN clinic
- A family medicine or internal medicine clinic during your annual wellness visit (physical)
Before making an appointment, check your insurance coverage. Most insurance providers cover only one breast/pelvic/pap exam at an OB-GYN office or one physical each year.
You can choose which type of clinic to visit based on what other health services you need.
