Imaging Exams & Procedures
Bone Density Test
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans measure bone strength. They help your doctor learn if you have osteoporosis—weak bones that are more likely to break. This information helps both of you plan how to keep your bones strong and prevent fractures.
Breast Imaging/Mammography
Mammograms are X-ray tests that check for signs of breast cancer. These tests are important because they can find breast cancer early when it's easier to treat. Learn more about breast health services at CentraCare.
Computed Tomography (CT)
CT scans use X-rays to take detailed pictures of your bones, organs and tissues from many angles. For some CT exams, you may receive an injection of a contrast dye that makes the inside of your body show up better on images.
Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiologists use real-time imaging to guide them during treatments. These doctors can fix problems like tumors and blocked blood vessels. The procedures are less invasive than surgery, which means you recover faster.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI scans use strong magnets and radio waves to take pictures of the inside of your body. These tests take longer than a CT scan, but don't use radiation. So, they're safe for most people.
Nuclear Medicine
Unlike tests that deliver radiation from a machine, nuclear medicine exams put a small amount of radioactive material into your body. You might swallow the material, breathe it in or get an injection. Then, doctors use a special camera to see what the radioactive tracer does in your organs.
Position Emission Tomography (PET)
PET scans are a type of nuclear medicine. They take pictures to show how your body's cells are working. You receive a small amount of radioactive material, and then the scan shows where it goes in your body. These pictures help your doctor learn more about tumors in your body and see if treatments are helping.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to take pictures inside your body. It's safe and doesn't use radiation. Your doctor might use it to look at your baby during pregnancy or see inside your belly or other body parts. Health professionals also refer to ultrasound as sonography or a sonogram.
X-ray Exams
X-rays are quick, easy tests that use a small amount of radiation to take pictures. Your doctor might use an X-ray to see if you have a fracture or another problem with your bones.
Accreditation Means High-Quality Care
You can trust that our locations have the right staff, technology and processes to ensure your safety and accurate results. The American College of Radiology accredits nearly all our facilities.
Image Gently
If your child needs a test that uses radiation, we’ll use the lowest dose that’s effective and safe. Our facilities follow national Image Gently guidelines to protect young patients during radiology exams.
Your Test Results
You’ll get a notification when your test results appear in MyChart. As soon as your doctor reviews the results, the physician will send you a message explaining them and recommending the next steps.
If a doctor outside CentraCare needs your test results, learn how to release your medical records.
