Video Swallow Evaluation with Speech Therapist

What is a Video Swallow?

A video swallow evaluation is an X-ray exam performed in the imaging department with a radiologist and speech therapist present to observe the patient swallowing different consistencies and textures to evaluate the ability to swallow safely and effectively.

Before the Exam

Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. For the best experience please properly prepare for your appointment:

  • Radiation is used for this exam. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant.
  • There is no special preparation.

During the Exam

  • You will be seated in a chair for the exam.
  • A radiologic technologist provides you with a variety of foods and liquid mixed with barium.
  • Multiple X-ray images are taken as you eat and drink the barium. A radiologist evaluates the x-rays.
  • The speech therapist will review the results with you after the evaluation.

After the Exam

  • You can resume your normal activity immediately following the exam.
  • Your stools may be light colored or chalky, this is normal.
  • A radiologist reviews the images and prepares a report for your provider. The results of your exam will be given to you by the ordering clinic.
  • Follow-up care is a key part of your health. Be sure to make and go to all appointments and call your primary care provider if you have questions.
