Home Instructions Following Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration
You had a fine need aspiration (FNA) biopsy of your thyroid gland. The following information may be helpful as you recover today.
Activity
- You may return to most activities and work today.
- Avoid any vigorous physical activity for 24 hours.
Symptom Control
- If you have pain and tenderness at the site, you may take your usual or recommended pain medication except for aspirin the day of your biopsy.
- You may feel more comfortable lying with your head partially raised.
- Avoid strain on your neck by placing both hands behind your next to support your head.
- You may develop a sore throat.
Biopsy Site Care
- If you have a small amount of bleeding at the site, lie down and apply gentle direct pressure to the bleeding for 10 minutes, then apply a new bandage.
- Brusing is normal and should fade in a week to 10 days.
- Keep bandage on and area dry for 24 hours.
When to Call Your Doctor or Seek Care
Call if you experience any of the following:
- Fever over 100 degrees.
- Increased redness or swelling at the site.
- Persistent drainage or pain around the site.
- Seek care at the nearest emergency facility if you experience any of the following:
- Neck swelling that creates difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Persistent bleeding – does not stop after 10 minutes of applied pressure.
Results
Lab results take approximately 4-5 working days. If you have not received your results within 4-5 days, please call your health care provider or ordering clinic.
Results will also be released in MyChart for your review.
