Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat both varicose veins and spider veins.

The doctor will inject small amounts of a hardening solution into the vein using a very fine, thin needle. The solution irritates the vein lining, which causes it to collapse and seal shut. As the injected area heals, the treated veins will fade from sight.

Before Your Procedure

• Your provider may ask you to stop taking medications that increase your risk of bleeding.
• You may want to shower before your appointment because you cannot shower for 24 hours after the procedure.

During Your Procedure

• The treatment area will be cleaned.
• The hardening solution will be injected into the vein using a thin needle.
• The number of injections will depend on the size and location of the veins.

After Your Procedure

• You will have compression stockings on when you leave the hospital.
• Wear the compression stockings day and night for 3 days after the procedure. Removing only to shower.
• After 3 days, you will wear the stockings for another 14 days. Removing only to shower and at bedtime.
• You may shower 24 hours after the procedure.
• No baths for 3 days. Avoid pools, lakes and hot tubs for 1 week.
• Maintain a normal level of activity.
• Walk at least 30 minutes today. Continue to do this daily for the next 14 days to promote healing.
• Do not sit or stand for long periods of time for the first week.
• Elevate your legs at least 3 times a day for 5 to 10 minutes for the first week.
• Avoid activities such as weight training or running for 10 days.
• You may have some discomfort and bruising following the procedure.
• If not contra-indicated, you may take medication such as Aleve or Ibuprofen to help with any discomfort.
• If your pain gets worse, you may have trapped blood in the vein. This is a common side effect of the procedure.
• You may apply warm packs for 30 minutes, 3 times a day. This will help with pain and healing.
• You may return to work the following day after the procedure.

When to Call Your Doctor

• Pain not relieved by rest and/or pain medications.
• Fever greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
