Parathyroid Scan

What Is a Parathyroid Scan?

Parathyroid scan uses a radioactive tracer to localize an abnormally functioning parathyroid gland. Your provider may order this test if you have abnormal levels of calcium in your blood or elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH). The scan can also be used prior to surgery to assist the physician in localizing the abnormal gland.
