Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

What Is Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)?

An Intravenous Pyelogram is an X-ray of the urinary tract that includes the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. Providers may order this exam to look for kidney stones, tumors, infections, abnormal formation and/or damage after an injury.

Before the Exam

• Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. For the best experience please properly prepare for your appointment:
• Radiation is used for this exam. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant.
• Please notify your doctor if you are allergic to X-ray dye.
• Your colon must be empty for this exam. Your ordering doctor will provide a bowel preparation for you to use the day before your exam.
• Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before the exam. You may take medications with small sips of water.

During the Exam

• A radiologic technologist helps position you for the exam.
• An IV is placed in your arm and X-ray dye is injected.
• Multiple X-ray images are taken.
• Images are reviewed with the radiologist (doctor) to determine if any additional images are needed.

After the Exam

• You are able to resume your normal diet and activity immediately following the exam.
• Drink plenty of water for a few days after the test unless your doctor tells you not to.
• A radiologist reviews the images and prepares a report for your provider. The results of your exam will be given to you by the ordering clinic.
• Follow-up care is a key part of your health. Be sure to make and go to all appointments and call your primary care provider if you have questions.
