Nurse Navigator

Early in your journey, you may meet with a nurse navigator who makes sure everything goes smoothly. They’ll answer your questions and guide you through each step of treatment. Ask this professional for referrals to chaplains, counseling services, support groups, cosmetic services and palliative (comfort) care.

Professionals You May See

Depending on your type of cancer and treatment plan, you may receive care from:

  • Medical oncologist/hematologist (cancer doctor) – Prescribes cancer medications and oversees your care
  • Radiation oncologist (cancer doctor) – Prescribes radiation therapy and oversees your care
  • Surgeon – Removes tumors and sometimes the organs they’re in to prevent cancer from coming back
  • Pathologist – Uses lab tests to diagnose cancer and stage tumors (see how far they’ve spread)
  • Pharmacist – Helps you manage your medications, so you get the most benefit from them with the fewest possible side effects
  • Nurses – Carry out your doctor’s orders, help you manage your symptoms and tend to your everyday health needs
  • Registered dietitian – Recommends ways for you to get the nutrition your body needs to heal, especially as you experience side effects of treatment
  • Rehabilitation experts – Provide physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to help you recover your abilities and strength
  • Financial counselor – Helps you navigate insurance coverage and find financial assistance
  • Social workers – Connect you to local resources, such as transportation, home care and programs that help you pay for medications
  • Tobacco treatment specialists – Help you stop smoking so your body heals better
