Toddler, 1-3 Years

Healthy Minds Support Healthy Bodies

Play is so important — it’s how a child explores and learns about the world. Play helps build strong brains, which is huge because 80% of a child’s brain is built by age three! Playful interactions with your toddler build important skills, like focusing and directing their attention, learning about cause and effect and practicing self-control. You can help toddlers play in many ways. Exploring objects using their senses, playing silly games, using imaginative and pretend play, creating art and physical play like crawling, or rolling a ball are all wonderful ways to play!

When you see difficult behaviors in your toddler, it usually means they need help expressing their feelings in an acceptable way. Take a moment to try to understand or imagine your child’s point of view. Stay calm, offer comfort and then help them problem solve.
