Your child may be questioning their gender or sexuality identity. This can be a confusing time for both you as a parent and for your child. You don’t need to be an expert to let your child know you care about them. LGBTQ children and teens who are supported by their families grow up to be happier and healthier adults with less mental health issues and suicide concerns. Coming out to parents can be a scary experience for any child or teen. Letting them know you are there for them, and that you still love them is the most important response. Some simple suggestions for responses include: “I’m here for you,” “I love you,” “I will support you no matter what,” and “There are no right or wrong ways to express love.” To help, we have compiled some resources to support you and your family on this journey.
