Conditions We Treat
Conditions our audiologists treat include:
- Hearing loss and other problems – Services cover everything from follow-up after infant hearing screenings and early hearing help for children to treatment for adult hearing loss. You may also benefit from hearing protection services. They’re for people exposed to loud noises in activities and on the job.
- Balance disorders – You might have a balance issue if you feel faint or like you’re going to fall, or you have dizziness, lightheadedness or a spinning sensation (vertigo).
- Tinnitus – This condition is most often described as ringing in one or both of your ears.
- Auditory processing disorders – This is when the brain has trouble understanding sounds. Even though a person can hear the sounds clearly, they might not be able to tell the difference between similar sounds in words.
Diagnosis & Testing
Get diagnostic hearing exams and tests for adults, children and infants at CentraCare. These services help your doctor find the cause of your symptoms and suggest treatments.
Hearing Tests
- Comprehensive hearing evaluation – Checks the inner, middle and outer ear. It tests your ability to hear sounds at different pitches and understand and repeat words.
- Otoacoustic emission (OAE) – Evaluates the inner ear’s responses to sounds by recording echoes from the ear.
- Auditory brainstem response (ABR) – Checks how your infant’s or child’s hearing nerve responds to sound. It looks for problems from the inner ear to the brain.
Hearing Loss Treatments
If your doctor diagnoses a hearing problem, you may have treatments, such as:
- Earwax removal to clear your ear canal of buildup that may cause temporary hearing loss
- Aural rehabilitation techniques to help you communicate better and stay active
- Assistive listening device (ALD) selection and fitting to amplify sounds and conversations, so it’s easier for you to communicate
- Hearing aid assessment, fitting and service
Hearing Aid Assessment
Finding out you need a hearing aid can be tough. But knowing more about them can help you improve your hearing. Your audiologist will explain what hearing aids can and can't do and discuss the type, style and features available.
Custom-Fit Hearing Aids
Fitting a hearing aid requires attention to detail because one size doesn’t fit all. Your doctor will take impressions of your ears to ensure a custom fit. A well-fit hearing aid should make soft sounds clear and loud sounds comfortable. Not everything should sound the same. A whisper differs from a conversation.
Our hearing aid fitting services include:
- Orientation and instruction on how to use and care for your hearing aid
- Follow-up visits to check how well your hearing aid works, make adjustments and perform tests
- Maintenance services during the warranty period, including replacing earmold tubing, cleaning and checking your hearing aid
