Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

If you have allergy or asthma symptoms, turn to CentraCare for complete care, management and support. We’re here to help you breathe easier and find relief.

What Does an Allergy & Immunology Doctor Do?

Allergies and asthma are common health problems that need treatment to help you feel better. Specially trained allergy and immunology doctors identify symptom causes and offer targeted care.

These doctors also manage conditions that weaken your immune system. When your immune system is weak, you may have infections that come back often or are hard to cure. Kids with immune illnesses may not be able to gain weight or grow normally.

Diagnosis: The First Step to Feeling Better

Trouble breathing and other allergic symptoms can happen at any age. Testing for allergies in adults and children is convenient and accurate. After a thorough medical history and symptom review, your doctor may use common tests to find out what’s triggering or worsening your symptoms. These tests may include:

  • Blood tests to measure immune system abnormalities
  • Skin and blood tests to detect allergies to:
    • Foods
    • Inhalants such as pollen, mold and dust
    • Medicines
    • Chemicals and substances
  • Lung function (breathing) tests
    • Spirometry – Measures the amount of air you can breathe in and out
    • Peak flow measurement – Checks how fast you can exhale forcefully
    • FeNO – Tests for the amount of inflammation in your airways
    • Challenge (bronchial provocation) tests – Assesses how sensitive your airways are to inhaled medicine, allergens and exercise
  • Chest X-ray

Individual Treatment & Support

Look forward to a custom care plan. It’ll help you control allergies, asthma and other immune system conditions. Your doctor may recommend:

  • Allergy shots (immunotherapy) to make your body less sensitive to an allergen
  • Lifestyle changes to avoid allergy and asthma triggers
  • An asthma action plan to help you better control your asthma
  • Epinephrine (adrenaline) injector for severe allergic reactions
  • Immunoglobulin (Ig) replacement therapy for immune deficiencies
  • Over-the-counter or prescription allergy medications
  • Quick-acting and long-term control asthma medicines
